Flying Colours takes a completely opposite approach to many of my other works, which are mostly reflective and serious in nature. Instead, Flying Colours is an energetic, whimsical and exciting reflection on the central theme of 'experiencing new things together'.
Whether its exploring new places, experiencing new cultures or trying unknown activities, Flying Colours is written as a duo to illustrate that journeys are better travelled with someone by your side. For me, the energetic nature is based on my recent travels to Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, where I found many new cultural experiences that were 'colourful' in appearance, nature and feeling.
Musically, Flying Colours takes inspiration from energetic video game and anime theme music, where themes often interchange between colourful solo parts with accompaniment and powerful unison sections. This is a reflection on the cyclical nature of travelling and experiencing new things. Flying Colours concludes with a long build up towards a sparkling cascade of notes. A simple unison ending signals the end of this journey, looking forward to the next.
Flying Colours requires a 3.0 octave vibraphone and a 4.3 octave marimba. You will receive one (1) PDF file with the full score, the vibraphone part and the marimba part.
